The Championships Wimbledon – June 23 – July 6, 2008

Known worldwide simply as Wimbledon, and well deserving of single-name status, The Championships Wimbledon is not only the world’s oldest major tennis championship, it is its most revered. With roots dating back to 1877, The Championships are a staple of the London sports scene and prove to be one of the biggest spectator draws in the UK year after year.

The tournament is held at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, founded only nine years before the Championships began. The venue’s adherence to the rich tradition of the sport is evident in the refusal to remake the courts with artificial turf or clay. In fact, Wimbledon is the last remaining Grand Slam event to be played on grass.

The Championships Wimbledon are also unique for reserving “day of” tickets for the three primary play courts, including Courts 1 & 2 and the Centre Court. Each court holds 200-300 seats over for potential spectators to purchase the day of the event. Formerly Hyde Park Calling, the newly-titled Hard Rock Calling is a boisterous yet family-friendly music festival hosted in London’s legendary Hyde Park. For its first two years, 2006 and 2007, the festival was named after its venue, but in 2008 it will make the switch over to “Hard Rock Calling” to better associate the event with its founding sponsor, the Hard Rock Café brand of restaurants and casinos.

Although still a young festival, Hard Rock Calling has grown quickly from two stages with 20 acts to three stages presenting over 36 bands during the two days of the festival, and the young age also hasn’t stopped it from generating some big headliners. While many of the second and third stage acts are still unannounced, the mainstage has garnered a number of heavy hitters for 2008:

The recent flooding in Australia, covering an area in Queensland the size of Germany and France combined, was not quite so unprecedented as it might appear at first glance. Australia as a continent has the least average amount of rainfall of all the continents, with the exception of Antarctica. Over 40% of Australia consists of sand dunes. Cold western currents prevent large scale evaporation of water to create clouds and rain and the lack of mountains in the west prevent the formation of clouds and rain due to uplift of air currents.

In the east, the Great Dividing Range or the Eastern Highlands, runs over 2100 miles along almost the entire eastern coast and prevents moist winds from reaching the arid interior, while portions of this coast, especially in the north, are tropical and subtropical and have very high levels of rainfall.

The El Nino/La Nina-Southern Oscillation also causes major fluctuations in the water temperature of the Southern Pacific, and has a deep impact on rainfall in the region, with long term effects on weather patterns, drought and the like.

Australia’s recent flooding broke a devastating three year drought (2007-2009) in Queensland and South Wales, and this was itself the end product of a decade long dry period which saw kangaroos and other native Australian species invading Canberra and other relatively wet locales in their search for sustenance.

In 2007, the entire state of Victoria was affected by drought, the first time since records were kept that this was so. There were droughts as far back as 1864-1866, and continuing droughts between 1880- 1886, 1895-1903, 1911-1916, 1939-1945, and 1963-1968. In many of these periods, millions of sheep and cattle died, as well as large numbers of native species, and farming was drastically curtailed, with the wheat crop especially impacted. Between 1958 and 1967, the always arid central part of Australia experienced its longest and most severe drought . Other droughts took place between 1982-1983 and 1991-1995, and of course the current drought just ended was also of extended duration and extremely destructive to farming and industry, coal mining in particular.

Current flooding may be the most destructive in terms of dollar damages, but Brisbane and other areas have been flooded extensively before (1893, 1974, 2011), and the fact that many towns were built on flood plains despite the warnings of native Aborigines, the indigenous people of the area, only exacerbated the problem.

Australians take a perverse pride in their environmental extremes, which include heat waves and bush fires, not just drought and floods. Recent widespread and spontaneous efforts by great numbers of the citizenry to help their neighbors clean up the mud and debris from the recent flooding attests to the resiliency of the Australian people and their powerful civic sense of duty and responsibility. It is likely that the recent troubles will simply add to the long heroic trail of tears that periodically rend this diverse and beautiful country.

Throughout history conductors and musicians have experimented with different sizes and make ups of musical groups to produce the style they are looking for. Composers have used a single person, groups between 3-10 and it is not uncommon to even have 50 or more members in a single group.

One of the largest musical groups is the orchestra. An orchestra is typically composed of professional musicians who have mastered their instrument and, in many cases, have some type of degree in music. Orchestras typically perform in concert halls and play symphonies, which are often historic pieces written by famous musicians like Beethoven or Mozart. These historic symphonies are performed exactly as they would have been hundreds of years ago when their creators first wrote them. The orchestra is lead by a conductor who helps keep the tempo and controls the symphony. The instruments used in orchestras are traditionally acoustic instruments and fall into four categories: woodwind, string, brass, and percussion.

A choir is in some ways the opposite of an orchestra. Instead of being composed mainly of instruments, a choir is based on vocals and can contain several hundred members. Choirs are also very old and are seen most commonly in churches. Many popular musicians, including Elvis, discovered music by joining his local church choir.

Because of the availability of electronic instruments, it is no longer necessary to use a large number of people to produce loud music, so modern music groups usually have between 3-10 people. The majority of modern music groups have a lead singer, a drummer, a guitar player, and a bass player. Some groups have additional singers, guitar players, keyboard players, synthesizers, as well as saxophones, and other more traditional instruments. Modern music groups use many different combinations of musical instruments, as well as playing styles, to achieve a desired sound.

A cappella groups are similar to choirs in that they do not use any instruments and they both have their roots in the church. Modern a cappella movements include barbershop and doo wop.
